right obstetrician for yourself during your pregnancy journey

Besides you and your partner, the one other person who is going to be actively involved in this journey of pregnancy is the obstetrician, who is going to be the guiding force right from the beginning up until months after the baby is delivered. Your obstetrician is the one you’ll turn to in moments of even the slightest doubt regarding your own health as well as that of the baby. That is why; this is the most important decision you will make. So, how do you find the right obstetrician? And if you already have one, how do you make sure they’re the best one for you? We’ve put together a helpful little guide.

Decide what qualities you’re looking for
For a lot of couples looking for an obstetrician, factors such as gender are crucial. You also want to make sure the doctor fits your budget, is not too far a commute from your home, is flexible with availability, and easy to communicate. You will also want a doctor who operates out of a hospital that’s covered under your health insurance.

Ask your family and friends
The easiest and trustiest way to find a good obstetrician is by asking family and friends for recommendations. Since they already have experience with the doctor and trust them, they’re easily good enough for you too. This will narrow down your search and help you make a more informed decision.

Look up online
If there’s a doctor you’ve heard of or came across online, but you need some extra guidance, online reviews are a great help. There are websites and portals online that shed plenty of light on a doctor’s credentials and recommendations.

Visit the doctor
Once you have shortlisted the doctors or found the doctor you would want to go ahead with, make sure you schedule an introductory visit to their clinic. While you’re at it, make sure you note how long it takes to get to the clinic, how easy it was to schedule an appointment, how long did you have to wait, is the clinic comfortable and hygienic and so on. Then comes the important part - the consultation. Pay attention to how well the doctor listens to you, whether the consult is rushed or thorough, if the doctor puts you at ease quickly.

Your medical history
If you have a serious medical condition such as epilepsy, high blood pressure, or any previous complication, you should go for a doctor who is experienced in dealing with pregnancies with such medical histories. As it’ll help you stay prepared beforehand and minimise your risks during as well as post pregnancy.

It’s okay to have a backup
If at any point you don’t feel comfortable or realise that things aren’t going as smoothly as you’d like with the obstetrician you have chosen, it’s completely alright to see another doctor. It’s wise to have a backup in place, in order to avoid last minute hassles. Your health and your baby’s well-being should be your top priority, and in these regards you shouldn’t have to make any compromises.
Your obstetrician is the one who’s going to hold your hand through everything you will experience in the nine months of pregnancy and the months after. They’re the ones who will educate you on all about pregnancy. So, it’s okay if you take your time to find one that you absolutely trust and can rely on.
