What exactly is Natural Family Planning?

Natural Family Planning, which is popularly known as NFP, is nothing but fertility awareness. It is the simple knowledge of the fertility of the couple. It is just a method of reading the different signs of the body, whether it is fertile or infertile. In NFP, there are no chemicals, devices or drugs involved, it is a 100% natural method. Which is one of the many reasons why people find it to be a refreshing and positive alternative to the different contraceptive methods available today! These Fertility Awareness Methods (FAMs) are different ways in which you can track the ovulation to avoid pregnancy or to get pregnant.

What are the different types of FAMs?

Fertility awareness methods are basically different ways in which you can track your monthly menstrual cycles. This is done to know when the egg releases from the ovaries every month. The ovulation day and the days around it are the fertile days when there are high chances of getting pregnant. These are different ways to predict your ovulation days. You can use any or all of these methods to track your fertile window.

1. Temperature Method:

The basal body temperature technique helps you to identify if there is a change in your body temperature. Your body temperature can say a lot about your health. Studying the pattern for 3 months can help you to predict your ovulation window. Generally, there is a change in the temperature after ovulation and it tends to remain the same until the next period. You can check the temperature every morning before getting out of the bed.

2. Cervical Mucus Method:

During every menstrual cycle, the consistency of the cervical mucus (vaginal discharge) keeps changing. The mucus is easily recognizable on the wettest day. It looks clear, slippery, stretchy, and resembles the egg whites. Without this ‘egg white’, it is difficult to conceive. Ovulation takes places within 1-2 days of this peak day of clear, stretchy mucus. Keep a tab on your vaginal discharge every day.

3. Calendar Method:

The popularly known method is the calendar method. It is nothing but keeping a track on your menstrual cycle to anticipate your fertile sign. Nowadays there are a lot of mobile applications as well to help you keep a track of your menstrual cycle. These applications also help you to predict your fertile window based on the length of your cycle.

When all these 3 methods are combined effectively, it is known as the symptothermal method.

4. Fertile Window calculator

Your fertile window is your best time to conceive. With the help of a fertile window calculator, you can increase your chances of conceiving. Your “fertile window” refers to the period in your female fertility cycle during which a woman is able to get pregnant. This includes the day she ovulates and the five days after ovulation. This is the best time to have intercourse if you're trying to conceive.

Are the FAMs effective?

Like any other method, fertility awareness method is more effective when you use it perfectly and consistently. If it used correctly, the rate of effectiveness can be around 90% as well. It all depends on how you track and record the menstrual cycle and the fertility pattern.

An egg lives for about a day after the ovulation takes place and a sperm lives for about 6 days in the womb after sex. Basically, a woman is fertile for around 7 days during each of her menstrual cycles. To break it down, we can say 5 days before her ovulation, the day of ovulation, and also a day or 2 after her ovulation.
